Betel Nut Lodge was conceived about 20 years ago – to create a small heritage hotel that will also be a space for Civic and Arts Events.
In its heyday, our original 2-storey building (built in 1860s) has been used variously as a family residence, an office & a tile shop. But, it was its last use as a birds’ nesting farm in 1990s George Town that caused untold damage – and the building lay derelict for about 15 years.
Conforming strictly to UNESCO’s guidelines for Adaptive Re-use, our building’s restoration involved much research, sourcing of heritage materials and countless engagements with artisans and heritage experts.
Strategically located in the heart of George Town, this once derelict property has now been meticulously restored. So, come experience our grand old dame of a building, its rich history and rejuvenation that has been more than 20 years in the making!
