Betel Nut Lodge had its genesis about 20 years ago to create a modest heritage accommodation that will also be a space for Civic and Arts Events.
The 2-storey building, built around 1860 was left abandoned & unappreciated in 1990s George Town. The original building had variously been used as a family residence, office, tile shop and finally a swiftlet farm . It was this last use as a birds’ farming site that caused untold damage – and the building lay derelict for about 15 years.
Strictly conforming to UNESCO’s guidelines for Adaptive Re-use, this derelict building’s restoration involved meticulous research, sourcing of heritage materials and countless engagements with artisans & heritage experts.
So, come experience Penang Peranakan culture in this restored grand old dame of a building that had been more than 20 years in the making!
