Char Koay Teow(CKT)
Char Koay Teow is one a top 5 on our list of Penang Street Food! This dish is made with Chinese rice flat noodles chilli fried with bean sprouts, eggs, prawns, cockles, garlic chives(and often chinese sausages). Purists of CKT insists on pork lard and wok-fried noodles over a charcoal fire.CKT is generally good all over Penang but our few favourites in town(in random order):
- Siam Road uncle -For a long time, this was one of the best and tasty of Penang’s CKT. However, since the advent of social media and an international news coverage of this once humble road-side stall, it’s quality has not been very consistent of late. Be prepared to wait for the old man ( yes, we very much prefer senior over the junior CKT Chef!) to deliver your plate of ‘wok hei’ CKT.
- Tiger CKT (Kopitiam at the corner of Lebuh Melayu & Lebuh Carnarvon) – This husband and wife team delivers great CKT in this original location. There is now another branch of Tiger just across the road on Lbh Carnarvon operated by a relative. Ask for CKT fried with duck eggs here, creamier and delicious!
- Lorong Selamat – There are several stalls of CKT in close proximity on this lane. But, pick the stall with the lady in goggles but beware of her temper!
